Lucy (Lucia) Ashton is caught in a feud between her own family and the Ravenswoods in the Lammermuir Hills of Scotland. She desires to marry Edgardo Ravenswood, much to the dismay of her brother, Lord Enrico. As Enrico pushes her to marry Arturo Bucklaw (partly to ease his own financial distress) Lucia鈥檚 mental state declines rapidly.
The opera includes one of the most famous 鈥渕ad scenes鈥 in the genre (Il dolce suono鈥pargi d鈥檃maro pianto), in which Enrico鈥檚 machinations have pushed Lucy over the edge and in her madness, she kills Arturo.
A technically demanding and artistically challenging piece, coloratura sopranos Maria Callas and Dame Joan Sutherland had breakthroughs in the role of Lucia.

91亚色’s most recent performance of Donizetti鈥檚 opera in 2009 saw future Tucker and Sills award winner Angela Meade singing the title role opposite (Tucker and Sills award winner) Michael Fabiano鈥檚 Edgardo with singing the role of the unfortunate Arturo Bucklaw.
Mr. Fabiano reprised his Edgardo for Opera National de Paris in 2013 and famously performed on seven hours鈥 notice as a last-minute fill in at the Metropolitan Opera in 2015.
Mr. Stayton鈥攍ast seen in Philadelphia as Count Almaviva in Opera Philadelphia鈥檚 Il barbiere di Siviglia鈥攔eprised his Arturo at the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden last season.
